OFSTED reports are a major concern for many schools, and the introduction of an awning or outdoor learning space will certainly contribute to the quality of learning facilities in a school. Back in 2008, OFSTED published a report specifically detailing the benefits of learning outside the classroom, and stated that often "outdoor areas were not easily accessible and, even where they were, they did not always provide pupils with such a rich range of choice or opportunity. Too often, a lack of suitable canopies... unnecessarily limited the use of these areas."

An awning also creates a useful divide between inside and outside, a space where children can calm down after playtime before entering the classroom.

A covered outdoor space can also be used as a reward space, as many children relish the chance to journey outside to explore. This can all be done in the safety of the shade, protected from possible sunburn.
